What to expect at your Nutritional Therapy consultation

If you are unsure whether a Nutritional Therapy consultation is likely to be of benefit to you, you are welcome to arrange a free telephone consultation to discuss your requirements and concerns in more detail. If you would like to do this, please provide your phone number and a convenient time to call using the contact form. Alternatively you might decide to book a taster session, to help make up your mind.

If you decide to go ahead and book a Nutritional Therapy consultation,  or if you have been referred by your medical practitioner you will be sent a detailed Health questionnaire with a food diary to complete. This can be completed electronically or by hand and returned at least 5 days before your appointment.

Your first consultation

This usually lasts from 60 to 90 mins, depending on the complexity of your health concerns, and will involve further questionning about your symptoms based on the information that you have provided in your questionnaire. You will then be provided with a number of dietary recommendations, tailored to your specific health concerns, with additional ideas,  factsheets and recipes that will enable you to achieve these changes. If necessary, you will also be informed about any additional testing that may be required in order to obtain more information about your current health and nutrient status. You will be provided with information about what the test is likely to reveal and the reasons for its recommendation. Tests will only be arranged for you with your consent.

Your second consultation (4-6 weeks later)

This consultation usually lasts up to 60 mins and involves a discussion around the progress made since your first consultation followed by any necessary amendments to the recommendations based on any new information. If tests have been completed, a detailed explanation will be given about the results and their relevance for your health. Additional recommendations will be given if any action needs to be taken as a consequence of these results. You may be offered a supplement programme at this consultation, if it is seen to be appropriate for your needs. Your own views about the use of supplements will have already been discussed and any recommendations will be based on your personal preferences.

Your third consultation (4-6 weeks later)

This consultation usually lasts around 30 minutes and is a follow-up appointment designed to review progress and make any necessary adjustments to your recommendations as appropriate. For patients with very complex or multiple health issues, additional follow-up appointments may be advisable, particularly if several tests are required.

Alternative consultation options:

The three-appointment package is recommended for most people as it gives an appropriate length of time to monitor progress and complete any necessary tests. It is suitable for people with minor or more severe health conditions as well as for those who wish to receive help with losing weight. For those people who prefer not to commit to 3 appointments from from the outset, individual appointments may be booked as and when required.

Some people may prefer to attend for a single appointment to request dietary recommendations for an individual health condition that is known to respond well to dietary intervention, such as hypertension, high cholesterol, low energy or constipation for example. In these cases, no tests or supplements will be provided but the full health questionnaire will still need to be completed before assessment. This is due to the fact that some apparently 'simple' health conditions may have a more complex root to them which would need to be addressed more comprehensively in order make noticeable changes. You are welcome to attend for a single appointment for dietary advice alone, but if your Health Questionnaire reveals possible causes for your condition that require more in-depth investigation, you will be advised of this. It is then up to you, whether you decide to book any further consultations to address these or not.

For patients who want to receive advice on how to lose weight, there are several options available. You can book a single appointment to learn about the current theories behind effective weight loss and how to apply these to your own lifestyle. Alternatively, you can book a series of consultations to help guide you through your weight loss journey depending on what you feel you need. Please feel free to arrange a telephone consultation if you want to discuss your requirements in more detail.

If you are not sure whether Nutritional Therapy will be of benefit to you, you are welcome to attend for a taster session which does not involve filling out a full health questionnaire. All you need to do is bring along a diary of your food choices over the last 3 days and you will be given some specific advice on dietary changes that you could make to improve your health and wellbeing. If you decide to book a series of consultations to address specific health concerns following this appointment, the cost and time of your taster session will be deducted from the full package.
